The Black Walnut Tree
OSU Visual Communication Design
Spring 2024
During my Intro to Visual Communication II, our semester project was about the trees of Ohio State's Campus. I chose 'The Black Walnut Tree,' which is notorious for its majestic structure with poisonous roots that harm other organisms. To tell the tree's story through a 12-page accordion book, I personified it, adding emotions and experiences of my own.
The full accordion spread in sequence.
The Goal:
Tell a story. Represent a visual history and traits of the Black Walnut to create a cohesive theme.
Process:
Researching and observing the tree to understand its uniqueness, structure, and aura were essential to completing this project.
One of a kind in the oval, the black walnut's recognizable trait is its red bark, which has led to the tree's becoming endangered due to poaching.
Representational images of what could be used to create a story, are derived from the keywords: broken, misunderstood, powerful, and free.
Connection:
Going through life’s trials I have come to understand my identity. Resilience is the capacity to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties. Like myself, the Black Walnut displays features such as protection, courage, and resilience in a constant uphill battle.
