My partner, Suyeon Chae, and I were tasked with creating a 5-minute animatic video relating to culture. As we both have solid identities and ties to music, we decided to focus on Hip Hop and K-pop genres.
The final animation.
The Problem:
Cultural Appropriation. Which is defined as an adoption of another culture or identity that is unacknowledged or inappropriate.
Through current K-pop and Hip Hop trends, there have been countless instances of cultural appropriation through hair, traditional dress, and language.
The Solution:
Cultural Appreciation. The opposite of appropriation which means to learn, listen, and understand another culture or identity.
Our research revealed the connections and mutual inspiration between these genres. This influence extends beyond Korea. Bruce Lee, for example, was a trailblazer whose impact can be traced to early and modern hip-hop culture, particularly in breakdancing. Understanding the history and culture of others is essential for fostering true diversity and appreciation.
Process:
With the chosen topic, we started to draw out key elements that have intertwined Hip-Hop and K-pop throughout history.

Style
Dance
Drawing similarities from each category, we included audio and visuals within the sketchbook style for examples.
